Scared to press “record”?
You are not alone.
Where does that fear come from? Well, some of it comes from your friendly neighbourhood inner critic.
Pretty much everyone has an inner critic that kicks into high gear when they start making online videos.
That gnarly voice in your head that says: you’re not good enough, talented enough, smart enough, pretty enough, funny enough etc, etc, etc.
It makes your feel as though all your “flaws”, your worst fears and deepest insecurities are on display for everyone to see when you press “record”.
And that fear knots up like a ball in your belly, gives you dry mouth, makes you forget what you were saying, makes you feel like you. can’t. do. this.
Check out this video to find out how you can start to tackle your inner critic today.
With some time, tools n practice, you can get through this fear!
There’s nothing more daring than showing up, putting ourselves out there and letting ourselves be seen.”

I loved this video, Michelle! You pinpointed my biggest issue with videos exactly – I procrastinate bc I feel stupid, hate the sound of my own voice (not that it’s ugly, but that it’s really disconcerting) and I’m really self-critical about how I look (I’m always worried that I look tired). However, I’m going to give this exercise a go as I think it’s wonderful. I’m going to imagine my favourite client as the camera and just give it my best shot! Wish me luck! 🙂
Hey Ania! I hear you lady. And you’re sooo not alone. Most people deal with this stuff when they face that camera. I’m so excited that you’re going to give the exercise a go. Let me know how it goes. I love that you’re going to imagine that the camera is your favourite client. Very cool!!!
Sarah….were you talking to me? There’s no one else here but me so I know you were talking to me!
All kidding aside, that video was so comforting. Your empathy about my fears really came through. I trust you. Loved it and signed up for your updates!
Love it! I made it with delightful people like you in mind Silvia. Glad it spoke to you. 🙂 And believe me, I have sooo been there. Looking forward to getting the next fancy pants newsletter out to my list later this week!
This is wonderful! Great video.
Thanks Lacy!
Sarah this is really helpful. Your video is wonderful and you are practicing what you preach. Great job!
Thanks so much Lorna! So happy you stopped by!
Ah, this was amazing! And I could so relate to what you were saying because I had to do a video the other day and it was horrible! It had to do it over and over again and in the end it was still not that great. They video I did after that already was a lot better and now I’m going to write this list and I am sure my next video will rock! 🙂 Honestly, this one thing you were saying about being clear who you are talking to is going to make a huge difference for me. THANK YOU! 🙂
That’s amazing Nathalie!! And good on you for bouncing back and doing another video. Indeed, getting specific about who you’re talking to makes a world of difference. Let me know how your next shoot goes! And keep in mind that every time you go through the process you can learn more about your strengths and about what you can work on. Cheers!!
Hi Sarah,
Great video! I’m thinking of starting to do video blogs on the website I write content for to mix it up and give the readers something different but I am very nervous about standing in front of the camera, I will definitely take on board your advice 🙂
Anna~ this is wonderful to hear! Be sure to give yourself permission to see this as a process, and remember that the filming process is 100% in your control. You don’t have to publish anything that you’re not comfortable with. Allow yourself to fall sometimes and allow yourself to have some fun. If you find that you’re getting too nervous, see if you can turn it into a game. Let me know how it goes lady. 🙂
Sarah, you inspired me so much today that I actually did a video! I started to get honest with myself about what I want to do with my life. Thank you, thank you, thank you!
Dejana~ now that is exciting!!! I can’t tell you how wonderful it is to hear that you’re taking some fantastic leaps! What piece of advice in the video was the thing that hit home for you and made you take action?
Putting myself out there isn’t as hard for me ’cause I like being silly and creating. But the biggest thing my inner critic has to say is that “no one’s going to see this so it doesn’t matter”. I loved when you said this about making a video “it’s a direct way to help somebody”. Sometimes I worry too much about what it means to me when people watch rather than thinking about what it means for them to watch. This was great, thanks and I loved the punching out the inner critic at the end 🙂
Thanks Lisa! Good on you for embracing your silly side! I’m sooo happy that you snagged that tip about helping someone with your videos. It’s a super great way to start taking the pressure off. 🙂
Sarah you are the cat’s meow:)
Awesome vid! I think I will put it on before every video I make! Great to have you in my corner coach;)
Haha, LOVE it!!! My pleasure Marisa! What’s your biggest inner-critic challenge for your videos?
Absolutely love this! and love how you used the music! so powerful…
I’m so happy you stopped by Yasmine!!! Looking forward to seeing you rock your video lady! 🙂
