I love me a good quote!
The other day, I was procrastinating researching, and rediscovered one of my all time favourite quotes by the esteemed Eleanor Roosevelt.
I got to thinking, and I realized that it totally applies for people who are getting started making videos. You may be battling a lot of fear and intimidation, especially in the beginning stages.
So, I decided that who better to get some advice from, than an icon with a gift for breakin’ it down.
And without further ado, get some lovely inspiration from Ms. Eleanor Roosevelt by watching the video below:
Tweet this video out and spread the word.
Be sure to leave a comment below telling me what your number ONE reason is for not pressing “record”.
I can’t wait to hear what you have to say!!
And as always…
Dream up,
Sarah Michelle Brown
Your Virtual Video Director
I’ve never liked taking pictures or being on camera – I know it stems my history as the overweight child and being teased for my appearance from a very young age. I know I’ve grown out of that stage, but the tendency is to let the inner critic take over when I pretend to see myself as an outside observer. I work through this weekly when I sit down to write my blogs in terms of just getting started, so I know I can just do it. If I can skype with clients, I shouldn’t fear the camera…I promise, I will hit record, if only for a second today, to take you up on your challenge!
Stacey~ thank you so much for your wonderful thoughts. You are sooo not alone in this. Many people (including me) have been scared to put ourselves out there in this way. I do hope that you press record after watching this, if only for a second. It’s all about taking those baby steps. Vulnerability is not something to be ignored or brushed aside. It’s part of what makes you unique, and also something that can be worked through when it comes to making videos. If you do press record, do let me know how your mini shoot goes. You can do it lady!!!!
Hey Sarah,
I’m digging your Eleanore Roosevelt analogy. (And your dance at the end of the video.) My #1 reason for stopping doing videos is that it was a huge time investment. I plan to start doing them again this summer, but really need to focus in on my strategy first.
Melissa
Hey Melissa! I hear you about the time thing. It’s all about getting some clear systems in place that are repeatable. It’ll get easier and take less time as you figure out what works best for YOU. One quick suggestion is to do bulk shooting. So you do a few videos at a time, rather than setting everything up every single time you shoot. Ps – Oh yes, I must sing and dance foolishly in life (and in videos apparently). lol
This is a GREAT reminder. I’m in the process of trying to make short, simple videos for something, and it’s so different from what I’m doing, that it feels terrifying! Thanks for the reminder that it’s just about giving myself that gentle push ESPECIALLY when it scares me!
Oh you can sooooo do it Marsha! I totally understand. I’ve gone from making creative works that are a couple hours long to 4 minute videos. lol Yep, totally get it. Funny how we so often have to go where that fear is in order to move forward in life/biz. Can’t wait to see what you come up with lady!!!
I LOVED your video! Thank you so much for giving me that little virtual push to press RECORD 🙂 I will totally do it today. It was on my to-do list (I have a blue ocean idea for my artisan jewelry website and it involves video)… stay tuned!
Do it up Nathalie!!! Keep it super simple today. The goal is to just press record. LOVE that your blue ocean idea involves video!!! Keep me posted. 🙂
Here you go Sarah!… I have made my recording and it has been uploaded to my product page here:

My blue ocean concept is not new (showing products on video), but in relation to online shopping, not too many places do this, and I don’t know of anyone in the handmade jewelry circle (so far) that is doing this. I feel that video is better than pictures, since women cannot touch/feel the product, this is as good as it gets.
Let me know what you think! 🙂
(and yes, I’m on the road, in our RV)
Thanks for feedback from fellow BSchoolers… I’m fine-tuning things. Who knew I would shoot a 2nd video today!?! Oh boy… LOL Here’s the 2nd attempt (shorter, different): http://www.nathalielesagejewelry.com/collections/handcrafted-earrings/products/full-moons-swarovski-sterling-silver-earrings
Woohoo Nathalie!!! Keep going lady! I loved finding out little secrets about the pieces. A quick lil suggestion to take the videos up a notch is to bring in some royalty free music at the beginning and the end (possibly underneath you talking as well, try and see). Adding a music element will help add to the mood and feeling of the pieces. Some sites I recommend include: http://www.beatsuite.com, http://www.premiumbeat.com, http://www.audiojungle.net and http://www.pond5.com. LOTS of great tracks to choose from. Prices range from $4-$80ish.
I LOVE that you went “record” wild today!!! Gogogogo!
Thank you Sarah! Yes, ending up with 4 (or is it 5 now?) videos is wild!!! I’ll look into those sites 😀
Woo Nathalie! Gogogogo!!!
Michelle I am digging your business. How cool is that? I knew you when… I am an actress also, a show biz kid, not because of my parents but in spite of them, I grew up thinking I was an actress who sang but make my living as a singer, I would love to create something too, your concept and vibe are so authentic and I hope it’s going really well. On line business is amazing. so glad I checked out this video.
That’s amazing Nika!! Yep, I’m definitely straddling that line of being a writer/director/performer while also being a new biz gal. Btw, I have SUCH a soft spot for singers. 🙂
So glad you stopped by, let me know if you have any questions lady!!! Rock on with your biz/artist self.
~ Sarah
Thank you so much for this video. I finally got a chance to listen today and I really, really needed to hear this. What I need today is saying that it is OK to take a nap – yup, one of THOSE days. But I have put down a date with myself to film the videos we need for our almost-ready animal acupressure product on Monday (husband scheduled, model dog scheduled, my calendar is scheduled so no distractions are allowed to intervene… so YES! It is on!) And to support that, I will spend the time in the next three days working on preparing for the shoot. Thank you so much for such a kind and supportive kick in the butt. Needed that…
Yes Susan!!! I’m so excited to hear that you’re about to press record on this and also that you have a new product to launch. Way to go lady!!! Do check in and let me know how it goes. Gogogogogo!!! 🙂
